KOOSH's purpose is to create a safe, stimulating and caring environment where children can be cared for while parents/carers work or study and where children can freely choose from the program of activities.
Katoomba out of school hours is an OOSCH service in the Upper Blue Mountains.
KOOSH has been an integral part of Belong Blue Mountains operating under Katoomba Neighbourhood Centre, since 1982. KOOSH provides before school, after school and vacation care to families with primary school aged children, between 5-12 years of age.
We aim to provide a high quality care service to local families who require it while working, studying or in need of respite. We strive to create a safe, happy and relaxed environment where all families feel welcomed and accepted.

Our program consists of planned educational experiences and spontaneous unstructured play drawn from our interactions with children. KOOSH’S child focused approach encourages every child to express themselves creatively and to feel valued.
At KOOSH our large indoor and outdoor environments allow us to facilitate a variety of activities to cater for children’s individual interests and stages of development.
Our indoor space has a large kitchen and eating in area, perfect for cooking in groups, preparing nutritional afternoon tea and catching up with each other at breakfast each morning while enjoying a milo.
We also have a designated Lego room, with so much Lego you could see it from space, a craft and visual arts area, a quiet reading area, with books for all ages and interests, puzzles, board games and card games. We also have an electronic media space for children to play educational or active games on the KOOSH game console or iPads. We also use the media space to watch films during rest times.
(Please note children are limited to 15-minute turns each on KOOSH iPads and game consoles and KOOSH obtains consent to show appropriately themed G and PG rated films upon enrolment)
Our outdoor space has a large grassed area, asphalt area, a sandpit (for use in warmer months) and soft fall area with play equipment. Favcilities are; monkey bars, swings, a tunnel slide, balance bridge and climbing net. There is an abundance of outdoor equipment, from balls of every size and colour to skipping ropes, badminton, mini trampolines and stilts for children to choose from and KOOSH staff often organise group games like soccer, cricket, hide and seek, dodgeball and tip. There are natural shaded areas amongst the trees where children can sit and relax with friends. The veranda is where children come together at meal times (afternoon tea during afterschool care and every meal during vacation care). It is also home to our Sustainability Corner with a worm farm, our return and earn project, mini garden, a recycling and composting station and lots of learning about.
Blue Mountains Bus Company provides transport to and from Katoomba Public School, St Canice’s Primary School, Leura Public School, Katoomba North Public School and Wentworth Falls Public School.
The buses are public services which stop outside KOOSH (6-10 Station Street, Katoomba), KOOSH staff walk children up to the bus and check seating every morning during Before School Care. During After School Care, we collect children directly from the bus and a roll call is completed once inside the first gate.
For more bus information please speak with KOOSH staff or Blue Mountains Bus Company.
Please note, your child will require a student opal card if they intend on using the bus service to travel to and from KOOSH.
KOOSH runs a Vacation Care Program each school holiday period, we only close for operation for 2 or 3 weeks over the Christmas period and public holidays throughout the year. Vacation Care hours of operation are 7am to 6pm, Monday to Friday and we usually operate on pupil free days based on expressions of interest from KOOSH families.
Our holiday program is usually available for families by the end of week 6 each school term and can be found on Belong Blue Mountains website, in schools and some school newsletters, at local neighbourhood centres, some local businesses and at KOOSH.
Breakfast is available during Vacation Care for children arriving before 7:50am. It is parents and carers responsibility to ensure children bring a packed lunch each day of attendance with plenty of healthy food and snacks for morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea. KOOSH IS A STRICTLY NUT FREE ZONE, please ensure your child does not bring any food or drink containing or possibly containing nuts as there are children attending KOOSH with allergies and anaphylaxis to nuts.
Advance Vacation Care booking are essential as spaces are limited and fill quickly, bookings are required to be submitted 2 weeks before the end of school term and vacation care fees paid before school holidays commence.
